In autumn, moist areas along Skyline Drive and open streamsides in the park display scattered spikes of the true blue flowers of great blue lobelia, a member of the bellflower family. Even though all parts of the plant are poisonous, Native Americans have used it for an extensive list of medical treatments. At one time the plant was used as a treatment for venereal disease, hence the species name, siphilitica. An infusion of the roots or leaves was used to treat worms, colds, rheumatism, fevers, and other ailments. Used in place of marriage counseling, it was also believed that ingestion of the roots would heal an ailing marriage.
